This is true regardless of whether or not an individual piece is owned by, or in the possession of, someone other than TSJA or the artist. TSJA and the artist are committed to the concept that the many popular and iconic works by Seward Johnson should be accessible for all to view, enjoy, appreciate and critique.
Through its licensing program, TSJA endeavors to achieve its goal of exposing Seward Johnson’s works to as broad an audience as possible. TSJA encourages artists, students, educators, commentators and others to take advantage of the opportunity to expand the reach of Mr. Johnson’s art to touch those who may otherwise be unable to see it.
However, TSJA also takes its obligation to protect the intellectual property rights attached to the works of Seward Johnson very seriously. Reproducing or otherwise making use of images depicting the works of Mr. Johnson without permission is a violation of U.S. and international copyright laws.

The Seward Johnson Atelier, Inc. (known also as “TSJA” and the “Atelier”) was incorporated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; particularly, to promote the appreciation of, and education about, sculpture and public art in general, primarily thorough the creation, maintenance, sales and public placement of J. Seward Johnson, Jr.’s artwork, as specified in its Certificate of Incorporation.
TSJA integrates sculpture into the fabric of everyday life and promotes the appreciation of sculpture and public art by producing authorized limited-edition castings of sculpture by Seward Johnson for both sale and exhibition. TSJA is the exclusive owner of copyright in Seward Johnson’s sculpture and is committed to educating the public about his artistic legacy. TSJA has received a gift of a collection of Seward Johnson sculpture, and it will continue to produce and sell sculpture, with the proceeds of sales, exhibitions and licensing being devoted to sustaining TSJA and its charitable and educational programs. TSJA will provide training for artists and skilled craftspersons in modeling, enlarging, casting, fabrication, paint and patina, and may offer those production and conservation services for a fee to sculptors and cultural institutions with an emphasis on promoting public art.
