What began as a sculpture on loan has become something much more personal at the Sadie Pope Dowdell Library in South Amboy, New Jersey. Seward Johnson’s After Lunch has been affectionately named “Edward” by library visitors and has quickly become a familiar and beloved presence.
Edward is now a part of everyday life at the library, joining families and visitors during programs and special events. From live animal programs to seasonal celebrations, children and adults alike enjoy stopping by to say hello. The library has even found ways to include Edward in its programming, making him feel less like a sculpture on display and more like a welcome friend.
As Library Director Elaine Gaber shared, “People of all ages enjoy having Edward as a friend.” His popularity is a wonderful example of Seward Johnson’s ability to bring art into everyday places, where it can spark connection, conversation, and a little joy.
Edward will remain on view at the Sadie Pope Dowdell Library through December 31, 2026.
